Wearing Scrubs: Dos and Don’ts

Nursing scrubs have captivated the public’s mind because of television, but for the medical or healthcare worker, they’re just as crucial as any other piece of equipment. They provide comfort for long hours, flexibility for challenging work, durability for routine wear and tear, and are generally simple to maintain. Still, there are dos and don’ts in your medical clothing selection.

In this article, we will tackle the different rules of wearing scrubs to help you understand their importance and how they can protect you from hazards and other contaminations while at work.

One way you convey yourself to employees and patients is via your clothing. Scrubs are commonly worn by healthcare workers during work. You may have no other option when it comes to your job attire, or you may simply choose to wear scrubs.

The good news is that there are more scrub options accessible today than in the past. The bad news is that scrubs may still be your least favourite fashion accessory. Whether you like them or despise them, there are some scrub dos and don’ts to remember.

Medical Scrubs: Dos

  • Check to discover whether the hospital has a policy about the colour of scrubs you can wear. Nurses, for example, may be forced to wear blue scrubs, whereas physical therapists may be compelled to wear green. You don’t want to spend money on scrubs just to discover that you can’t wear one of the colours.
  • Check to see whether you are eligible for a uniform allowance or if the hospital offers scrubs. Some hospitals pay for their staff’s scrubs. If you accept a travel assignment, you may also be eligible for a uniform allowance.
  • DO consider your comfort. You want to feel at ease during your shift. Consider which type of scrubs are the easiest to move about in. Depending on your work, you may spend the day adjusting patients, moving equipment, and bending or crouching. A drawstring or elastic waistband may be suitable.
  • Select the right size. Baggy scrubs are unsightly and might even appear sloppy. Try on scrubs before buying if feasible, and choose something that fits comfortably without being too tight. You don’t want to split your pants by bending over to pick anything up.
  • Limit your accessories. A ring, a watch, or a tiny pair of earrings are acceptable, but extravagant bracelets or lengthy hanging earrings are usually not. Also, avoid perfume and cologne. You don’t want to cause someone to have an asthma attack.

Medical Scrubs: Don’ts

  • Mixing too many bright colours or designs is not a good idea. Printed scrubs are adorable, but don’t go crazy with patterns and bright hues that are hard on the eyes.
  • Avoid wearing too-revealing scrubs. Maintain a professional appearance by avoiding plunging V-necks and showing your undergarments. Women should avoid wearing low-cut scrubs or t-shirts. Male chest hair poking through a scrub top is likewise frowned upon. When it comes to scrubs, attempting to make them seem indecent is a major fashion faux pas.
  • Wear low-cut shoes. However, when bending over in the hospital, you don’t want to reveal too much. If you like low riders for comfort, put a t-shirt under your scrub top and tuck it in to keep your rear from showing as you sit.
  • Don’t overlook the fundamentals. Keep in mind that you are representing the hospital or medical facility where you work. Scrubs should be nice and clean, with few creases.
